Abstract

Examined the differences in communication methods used by therapists with developmentally disabled children in both individual therapy setting (ITS) and group therapy setting (GTS). Ss were 3 therapists and 3 of their clients who were developmentally disabled children receiving ITS and GTS for an hour every other week inJapan. Ss’ ITS and GTS sessions were videotaped and their conversations and actions were recorded between August and November, 1997. The results show (1) that therapists talked to their clients more in ITS than in GTS; (2) that there was more guidance, clarification, parallel talk, and modeling in therapists’ communications in ITS, but more confirmation and explanation of the situation to clients from therapists in GTS; (2) that one therapist, who mainly used a reflection strategy during the ITS with a client who had severe language difficulties, changed her communication to an interrogative style in GTS; (3) that a second therapist, who mainly used an interrogative style in his reflection strategy with a child who had mild language difficulty during ITS, exhibited this pattern less frequently in the GTS; and (4) that closed questions were used more during the ITS while open questions were used more in the GTS.
